We all face a time in which we need to change the ceiling or remove it for some reason. Many of us compromise because of the thought that removing ceiling tiles will break it. No need to take more stress.

In this article, I will guide you with a basic and easiest way. Here are all the steps that we are going to discuss:

How to Remove Ceiling Tiles without Damaging Them

Prepare necessary tools

As always, our first step will be grabbing the tools. Any process can’t proceed without tools. Tools play a vital role in the process. In this activity of removing the ceiling without damage they will need:

  • Ladder
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  • Putty knife
  • Flat tool

These all are important tools and they will be used in all coming steps. So you have to collect one of them and keep it together.

Set up the ladder securely under the area where you will start.

Next, place your ladder securely under the area where you will start the removal. This step should be performed with full attention. Because if the ladder didn’t set properly, you could fall and get injured.

Put on safety glasses and gloves for protection.

Removing tiles can throw particles, so for your protection put on the safety glasses and gloves. Glasses will protect your eye from dust coming out while removing the tiles. On the other hand, gloves will save your hands from getting dirty.

Begin with a perimeter tile or a tile near the edge of the drop ceiling grid.

Start removing the tiles from the perimeter tile or an edge tile. Removing tiles from the edge one by one will be easy for you and mannerly. Start from the edge and then remove all the forward-coming tiles one by one.

Insert the putty knife or flat tool gently between the grid and the tile edge.

For removing the tiles you have to grab a putty knife or flat tool. You can use any of the 1 between them. Slowly insert the putty knife between the grid and the tile edge. Gently insert it whole. Make sure it is inserted nicely and slowly so it will not damage the tile.

Slowly lift the tile edge, allowing it to drop down slightly.

Once your putty knife reaches inside nicely. Next, slowly lift your putty knife which will apply pressure to the tiles. So slowly lift the tile edge and make it drop down slightly. You have to perform this step patiently if you lift the tile edge with pressure it will break your tile in parts.

Slide the tile to the side to disengage it from the opposite grid flange.

After making it drop down slightly. Slide the tile to the side to disengage it from the opposite grid flange.

Gradually lower the tile out of the grid, supporting it with both hands.

Wear gloves in both hands and place them on the tile. Now gradually lower the tile out of the grid. Now again slightly pressure the tiles towards yourself. Make sure to use both hands that will give it support and prevent it from falling.

Stack tiles flatly on top of each other to prevent bending or warping.

As you remove the tiles keep them in in stack flatly on each other. Stack keeping will make it safe, and secure and prevent bending. So you can tension free about it.

Move to the next tile and repeat the process until all tiles are removed.

You have learned the steps, now start repeating all the steps to all the tiles. Move toward the 2nd tile and so on. Keep repeating the process until all the tiles are removed. As you remove all the ceiling tiles properly keep them so that they will be safe for the next use.

My Opinion

Changing ceiling tiles according to the trend can be fun. But many of us think that tiles will get damaged during changing it. No, it will not. If you remove it with proper attention and care.

Just follow all the above steps. All the steps are important and play an important role in the whole process so don’t miss any of the steps. Make sure to wear safety glasses because safety comes first. You should perform all the steps patiently otherwise tiles can break. You can seek help from any professional person around you.
