How to Install Corbels under Granite

Step 1: Measurement

  • First of all, measure the length from the edge of the cabinet to the countertop’s edge.
  • If there is any lip, then measure inside the lip.
  • The point must be wide enough to span under the countertop.
  • Measure the length of the corbels; each of 36″ support is needed.
  • Measure the length of the support required.

Step 2: Cutting

  • Cut a ¾ inch of hardwood.
  • Measure the width from both ways.
  • If you measure 10 inches, then measure 9 inches of plywood by 9 inches.
  • If your countertop is square, then take square corbels. The shape of the corbel depends on the countertop shape.
  • Use table saw for square measurement of countertop and corbels.
  • Now next step is to select material hardwood or plywood? Which one do you prefer?

Plywood: Plywood is the first choice of cabinet-makers.

  • Good quality plywood is long-lasting for more than 150 years.
  • Plywood holds up the edges for a more extended period.

Hardwood

  • Some cabinet makers also choose hardwood for corbels.
  • Hardwood panels can be used to cut corbels.
  • Hardwood looks better than plywood.
  • If it’s not appropriately drilled, it can split.
  • It costs significantly more.
  • Now it’s on you which one you prefer for your corbels countertop.

Step 3: Draw, cut, and finish

  • Now draw a curve onto the square piece of plywood/hardwood from corner to corner.
  • You can make any curve; I will prefer a French curve.
  • Use a band saw to cut the curve.
  • Then use grit paper for sanding it correctly. You can use a 100-grit paper for sanding; it will help the primer stick on the corbel wood.
  • When making a French curve, it is not necessary to make it perfect as its curve will adjust the points.
  • After sanding, you can finish the corbels for efficiency.

Step 4: Drill

  • Place the curve under the counter.
  • Please place it in a position that the French curve is facing outward.
  • Now the square edge of the French curve should be on the opposite side of the cabinet.
  • One square edge must be flush with the end of the countertop.
  • Now place the plywood corbel where you want to support.
  • Mark off the spacing between each corbel.
  • Now place a tri square to make sure the wood corbel is vertical.
  • Trace around the corbel to flush against the back of the cabinet.
  • Now remove the corbel.
  • As you see the marked point, Drill three holes around the tracing. The holes will penetrate through the cabinets, where you have to screw it off inside the cabinets.

Step 5: Installation

  • In this step, place a pocket hole jig on the corbel.
  • Drill three holes upward from the corbel.
  • Ask somebody to hold the corbel accurately from the front and put a screw.
  • Now go on the front side of the cabinets.
  • Remove any obstacles from the cabinets.
  • Now put screws in the corbels to fix it and tell your assistant to tighten it from the other side of the cabinets.
  • You can pre-drill holes if you are not satisfied with your driller.
  • By following the whole procedure, you can install it on other sides under the granite countertop.

Step 6: Finish the job

  • Screw on all the corbels from the inside of the cabinet.
  • Using pocket holes and screws to finish the screwing from the top of the corbel to the cabinets down to support it.
  • Granite countertops should have pre-drilled holes on the underside of the countertops for mounting purposes.
  • Attach the brackets for the countertop with screws and a screwdriver.
  • Now put epoxy glue on the shelf and attach a granite countertop to the shelf. Epoxy glue provides bonding support as the support stone offers.
